A CALL FOR ART

A Multi-Grid  Project - CALL FOR ART

Goal:
To execute the development of three collaborative multi-paneled encaustic paintings that serve to unify and exemplify the bond of encaustic artists.

Objective:
The primary motivation for this project is to connect us with others; because as we work in our studios, we often become isolated in our own insulated bubble. Together, we will be creating a work of art that in total is greater in sum than its individual parts. We will be working in harmony for the benefit of humanity (see below).

Grid Description:
The Grid spells the word, "HARMONY" in Britannic Bold font. The grid consists of (32) 12”x12”x2” cradled panels. Panels will be hung in such a manner that they will be flush with each other in a 4'x 8' panel grid.

One panel per Artist. To maintain consistency, all panels must be ordered from Rodney Thompson.

Panels will be assigned on a first-come/first-served random basis until all panels have been assigned. Registration will be closed when all panels have been assigned. Panels will be shipped after all 32 panels have been assigned.

Application Agreement
If an Artist is unable to fulfill this Agreement, they are responsible for notifying Rodney immediately. The panel will be assigned to another artist. All artists must honor the responsibilities of this Application Agreement. The Artist must communicate any changes to one of the team members.

Artists will not be juried to be eligible, but must agree to the following:
The primary medium must be encaustic. The Artist must adhere to the designated color palette, but has freedom to paint with all or any of the colors or their mixed derivatives. In addition, the Artist is not limited to encaustic paint but may include other mediums, transfers, collage materials, etc., as long as they are compatible with the designated color palette.
Designated colors are:
  • Indian Yellow
  • Golden Green
  • Raw Umber
  • Titanium White
All panel edges (cradle sides) must be masked during painting to ensure clean smooth sides and edges. No wax should extend beyond the panel edge.

The Artist will maintain visibility of the numbers and markings on the back of the panels.

The Artist will receive their cradled panel prepared for joining and/or hanging with the grid of panels, and with an outline on paper of their letter segment(s). The Artist must accurately transfer the letter segments in proper orientation onto their panel.

The Artist MUST follow the shape(s) of their letter segments exactly and create a contrast
between the letter's shape(s) and the negative space on their panel.

The Artist will make arrangements with Rodney to order and pay for the panel. Each cradled panel will cost $30, plus shipping fees. The price includes:
  • a 12”x12”x2” cradled panel;
  • preparation of the panel to be joined in the grid (including the appropriate hardware for hanging);
  • a paper outline of the letter segment(s);
  • packaging for shipping the panel to the artist
The Artist will retain ownership of their completed panel and will be responsible for storing the panel between display venues.

The Artist will be responsible for packing and shipping their panel to and from shows. In addition, should any other costs arise in the process of promoting or showing the art, reasonable expenses will be evenly divided amongst the participants.

The Artist will help locate & coordinate venues to display the grid.

The Artist will take a high quality digital photograph of their completed panel (jpeg, 300 dpi, approx. 4"x6") and send the photo to Rodney. A website page will be established showing the completed panels assembled in the grid as they are completed, and the URL will be available to each Artist that has sent in their photo. The composite image may be used for publicity purposes in obtaining and publicizing possible show venues (thus the need for quality photographs).

In the spirit of Harmony, the whole grid will be priced for sale at $5,000.00 retail and the proceeds of a sale, minus gallery or venue fees will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. Individual panels will not be for sale; only the whole grid of 32 panels will be for sale.
